Can a Cracked Trailer Hitch or Tongue Be Welded? Fair Price & When to Replace

WELD ITUsually weldable, IF the steel around the crack is solid

Why

Most hitch and tongue cracks happen at a weld toe or where a coupler mount takes the load. On solid mild steel, a proper grind-out, full-penetration weld and a reinforcing plate or gusset is a permanent fix.

Where it stops being a repair: the tongue is rusted thin, it's cracked in several places, or somebody already welded over it once and it cracked again next to the old weld. Then you replace the tongue or coupler instead of patching it again.

Bolt-on parts like couplers and ball mounts are often cheaper to just replace than to weld. A good welder will tell you that.

DIY or hire a pro?

DIY only if you can lay down full-penetration welds on 3/16"–1/4" steel and you know what a cold lap looks like. This part holds a loaded trailer behind your truck at highway speed. If you're learning, practice on a fire pit, not on this. Bolting on a new coupler is a fine DIY job. Welding the tongue is a pro job.

⚠️ Safety

If the coupler, tongue or receiver is cracked, don't tow on it, not even "just to the shop." Bring the welder to the trailer or haul it on another trailer. Always use safety chains crossed under the tongue.
