Broken Wrought Iron Railing: Can It Be Welded? Fair Repair Cost

WELD ITWeldable, unless the post base is rotted

Why

Broken joints, loose pickets and cracked welds on steel railings weld fine on site.

The usual hidden problem is the post base. Rust eats the post where it sits in concrete or on a bracket. If the base is gone, that section needs a new post or base plate, not just a weld on top.

DIY or hire a pro?

Painting and rust treatment: DIY. Welding a railing people lean on, especially on stairs or a raised deck: pro job. The welds have to hold a person falling against them.

⚠️ This is a structural, load-bearing part. Epoxy, putty, or other DIY adhesive fixes are not safe here. Below are replacement parts and protective gear only; the repair itself should be a proper weld or a new part.

⚠️ Safety

If a stair or balcony railing is loose or broken, block it off until it's fixed. Railings are a fall-protection item. Local code may apply to height and spacing if a section is rebuilt.
