Can a Cracked Mower Deck Be Welded? Repair Cost vs New Deck
Why
Stamped decks crack around lift brackets and spindle mounts, often where the factory used a few spot welds. Welding the bracket all the way around and adding a small doubler plate often makes it stronger than new.
Replace instead when the deck is rusted through in several places, cracked around more than one spindle, or warped so the blades don't sit level.
Epoxy and JB Weld don't hold on a vibrating deck. They're a stopgap at best.
Fair shop price
| Job | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Small deck crack, professional weld | $20–$80 | SolutionSlate |
| Real-world example: JD 42" deck brackets welded at Tractor Supply | $64 (one user report) | r/lawnmowers |
These are published prices from the sources listed, not quotes. Your price depends on rust, access, metal type, and travel. Typical welder labor runs about $60–$125/hr nationally (HomeAdvisor).
Cost to replace instead
Replacement deck: push mower up to about $200; riding mower about $300–$1,000; zero-turn about $400–$2,500 (Mowrator). Example: a 42" John Deere replacement deck was about $700 vs $2,299 for the cheapest new 42" JD mower; a 21" Troy-Bilt push deck was about $126 (SlashGear).
DIY or hire a pro?
Good beginner-to-intermediate DIY job if you can weld 10–12 gauge sheet without blowing holes. Pull the deck, clean it to bare metal, drill stop holes at the crack ends, and stitch-weld. If you're paying a pro, a small crack is cheap work. Don't let anybody talk you into a new $700 deck for a cracked bracket.
🚩 Ripoff red flags
- Being sold a new deck for one cracked bracket or a short crack.
- Shop welding over paint, grass and rust without grinding to bare metal.
- Hourly labor that piles up on top of the weld (like adding spindles and blades you didn't ask for).
🧰 Tools & parts for this job
- Replacement mower deck (search your mower model)If the deck is rotted thin, a new deck beats welding patches on patches.
- Mower deck spindle assemblyCracks often start around a worn spindle mount; replace the spindle while you're in there.
- Angle grinder flap discsClean the deck to bare metal before welding or painting.
- Rust converter primerUnderside rust is what kills decks; treat it after the repair.
- JB Weld steel epoxy (small non-structural pinholes only)OK for a pinhole away from the spindles; not a fix for cracks at mounts.

⚠️ Safety
Pull the spark plug wire (or the battery on electric) before you touch the deck. Drain fuel or keep it well away from welding. A cracked spindle mount can throw a blade, so don't mow on it.

Common questions
Can you weld a cracked lawn mower deck?
Yes, most steel decks weld fine if the metal around the crack is solid. Clean to bare metal, drill stop holes and stitch-weld, or add a doubler plate.
Is it cheaper to weld a mower deck or buy a new one?
Usually welding. A small crack repair runs about $20–$80, while replacement riding mower decks run about $300–$1,000.
