Can Cast Iron Be Welded? Wood Stove, Housing & Part Repair Guide
Why
Cast iron can be repaired by preheating and welding with nickel rod or by brazing. It's slower and more skill-dependent than steel. Done wrong, it cracks right beside the repair.
It's worth it when the part is obsolete or expensive (stove parts, gear housings, antique parts). It's not worth it when a new part is cheap and easy to get.
Fair shop price
| Job | Published price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Small crack repair on brackets/housings | $100–$300 | Ames Hydraulics |
| Manifold repair | $150–$400 | Ames Hydraulics |
| Larger structural repairs (machine bases, big housings) | $300–$900 | Ames Hydraulics |
| Cast iron repair, brazing or nickel rod (mobile) | $200–$600 | Greenwood Welding Repair |
These are published prices from the sources listed, not quotes. Your price depends on rust, access, metal type, and travel. Typical welder labor runs about $60–$125/hr nationally (HomeAdvisor).
Cost to replace instead
Depends on the part. Obsolete stove and machine parts may not be available at all, which is when repair pays off (price the new part before deciding).
DIY or hire a pro?
Not a beginner job. Cast iron needs preheat, slow cooling and the right rod. Brazing a non-structural crack is possible for experienced hobbyists. Everything else goes to a pro.
🚩 Ripoff red flags
- A welder who says they'll "just MIG it" with steel wire and no preheat.
- No mention of grinding the crack out and finding where it really ends (cracks in castings run farther than they look, as Ames Hydraulics puts it).
- Overpricing a cheap, available part as a big repair.
🧰 Tools & parts for this job
- JB Weld high-heat or steel epoxy (non-pressure, non-structural cracks only)Fine for a cosmetic crack; not for manifolds under pressure or load-bearing parts.
- Cast iron crack repair pins (metal stitching)Metal stitching is a cold-repair alternative for some housings; ask a pro first.
- Furnace / stove cementSeals joints on wood stoves; it does not fix a cracked casting.
- Wire brushesClean the casting so the full crack is visible before you decide.
- Safety glasses and leather work glovesCast iron grinding dust and edges are harsh on eyes and hands.

⚠️ Safety
Pressure-holding parts (boilers, pressure vessels, gas valves) and anything that carries a load overhead need extra caution. Some pressure work requires certified repair. Ask before anyone welds it.

Common questions
Can cast iron be welded?
Yes, with preheat and nickel rod, or by brazing. It's slower and harder than welding steel, so pick a welder who has done cast iron before.
Can a cracked cast iron wood stove be repaired?
Often yes. Cracks in stove bodies and fireboxes are commonly repaired by welding or brazing. Have the whole stove checked for other cracks first.
